Personal Bible study, prayer and community part II.

If you would, please go back and examine the photo. Give it another glance. It's chaos! This is your life! ;) I wrote the first part of this blog nearly two years ago. How time flies! Since writing that blog I have learned many things. I have matured, reflected, grown in the love of Christ and realized my sin nature even more. I look back at that original blog and reminisce about the person I was when I wrote it and recognize the transformation that Christ has done in my life since then. I hope to look back inRead More...

What is Truth?
Posted by Evan Whitman in Gospel Living | Comments (0)
What is truth? Pontius Pilate uttered to Christ. Truth. a statement that is generally believed to be true There is Truth in many things. That does not make that an absolute truth. There is some truth in all religions and belief systems. The sky is blue. Some days it appears to be blue, other days it does not. I doubt many would object to someone saying the sky is blue. We have truths that we adhere too. Are they absolute? Should they be? The truth that I believe may differ from the truth that you believe. Here is aRead More...

A eulogy that was never written
Posted by Evan Whitman in Gospel Identity | Comments (0)
I am 31 years old. I have been to far more funerals in my life than I care to remember. Why? Because they hurt, not because I care any less about the person deceased. Chances are if you’re reading this you have been to your fair share as well. No one wants to think about the pain of a loved one who is no longer with us. I have lost people in my life ranging from grandparents to my father to friends committing suicide to friends dying in drunken driving accidents to overdoses to coworkers, etc… I supposeRead More...

Where the rubber meets the road

A few months ago I wrote a blog titled “Called to love and serve others despite of what they’ve done, or not…” you can see it here if you would like here The blog wasn’t a block buster (maybe it struck a nerve), it didn’t generate many comments and I’m not sure how many people read it. And that’s ok. I wrote it from the posture of confession and it was a blog that I needed to write to reorganize thoughts and priorities. If only one personRead More...

Called to love and serve others despite of what they’ve done, or not…

I have never known anyone who hasn’t been hurt. All of us have been hurt. Many of us have been hurt deeply and suffer from the scars and lasting effects of pain, abuse, let down, disappointment, fill in the ____________. You get my point. Usually our common human response to pain is “They did this, or they did that”, and rightfully so, they probably did do said __________. We do suffer the consequences of others transgressions against us and I am by no means trying to diminish that. However the question I need to ask myself daily is Read More...

Easter with no bunnies, eggs or scavenger hunts
Posted by Evan Whitman in Worship | Comments (0)
Easter is arguably the most important “Holiday” in the Christian faith, and yet it probably the most misunderstood, abused and bastardized. Something perfect and beautiful died in our place and yet we spit in His face everyday with our actions, words, works and lack of faith in what He accomplished on the Cross that day. He died for us because we are helpless in ourselves and could never pay the debt. Ever wonder why hell is eternal? Those who are not in Him are punished eternally because not even the eternal pain and suffering (that some will face)Read More...

Personal Bible study, prayer and community? Huh…

Recently I had an awesome and inspiring conversation with a fellow brother who, as of late, hasn’t been attending Sunday morning gatherings or engaging in community whatsoever. I asked him how things were going, and he informed me that times have been tough. His family is experiencing serious health problems; there are tensions in his marriage and self confessed “my spiritual life is in the toilet”. I asked him, what are you doing about it? After minutes of conversation he told me that he hadn’t been reading or praying much lately and told meRead More...
