Repentance As the Posture of Discipleship

Summary
In this sermon we explore the relationship of repentance to making disciples and Gospel witness. While it is established that repentance is the goal of discipleship, it is equally the posture of making disciples. When the Church allows itself to see its own commitment to the Gospel as a personal virtue, we then become arrogant. The Gospel is always a gift and something we can never take pride in. Here Pastor Todd takes us into exploring a broader view of repentance as humbling ourselves and leads us in an exploration of Christʼs self-humiliation and humbling and emptying of himself in the incarnation and crucifixion. Through this wee see how Jesus, though sinless, in his voluntary self-humiliation modeled perfect humility and a repentant posture. We then explore how we are to practice humility and repentance as the primary apologetic for which the world has no answer.
Todd came to the faith at the age of 19 after growing up in the skateboarding indie-punk culture of the 80’s. He lives with his beautiful wife Christine and six healthy boys, Judah, Anson, Keegan, Aiden, Cailan, and Rowan in a suburb of Providence. Todd is an accomplished Bible teacher with an BA in Biblical studies and MA in Hebrew Bible studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has also taught biblical studies for the department of Philosophy and Religion at Western Kentucky University, and is the author of the Pocket Dictionary for the Study of Biblical Hebrew (InterVarsity Press, 2003). When not writing, preaching or teaching, he can often be found playing Xbox with his sons or surfing with Judah. Once in a while you might even still catch him skateboarding.
