Repentance as the Goal of Discipleship

Summary
In this sermon we look at the subject of repentance in particular. IN a haze of so many voices telling us what we should be focusing on spiritually, the New Testament call to discipleship has one, namely repentance. Repentance is the Goal of all Gospel witness. But repentance is not a singular decision or experience as often portrayed. Rather, repentance is the act of reorienting our life and values toward the will of our creator. It is a constant and continuous practice of abandoning our independence for service to Christ as Lord. In the story of John the baptist in Luke 3, it is instructive however to see whom his audience is. His audience is Godʼs people. John begins by not calling the gentiles and unbelievers of the world to repentance first, but to Godʼs people. John begins by evangelizing the church first. In this we learn how the Gospel is always for the church as a people who are sojourning in the city of man. It is then our calling as Godʼs people to practice daily repentance as individuals and a community so we can be co-participants in Godʼs redemption of the world.
